A racing suit or racing overalls, often called a fire suit for its fire protection properties, is a coverall-like garment worn in various car races to keep track of race drivers, workers working on cars during races, and security personnel. or commutators in evt on marshals and other series.
Auto Racing Suits
In the early days of racing, many races in the series did not have approved liveries. Beginning in the 1950s and 1960s, high-quality racing suits were designed to raise the rider’s temperature by transferring heat and subsequently protect the riders from fire.
By 1967, the majority of competitors in Formula 1, NASCAR, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), the United States Auto Club (USAC), and Champ Car (the forerunner of today’s IndyCar) began wearing special fire suits.
A racing suit designed to cover the steering wheel of the driver, crew member or police officer, with long sleeves and long trouser legs. Pilot suits are one-piece coveralls that resemble overalls in appearance. Some firefighter uniforms consist of a two-piece “jacket” and pants.
These suits also have epaulettes or yokes on the shoulders that act as “handles” to remove the driver, who is strapped into the racing seat, from the car. This is allowed under Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) safety regulations.

Most suits use fabric made from Nomex, a synthetic material manufactured by DuPont that retains its fire-retardant properties over time and use. Other garments include cotton treated with Proban, a chemical produced by Rhodia, or other materials. These clothes may lose their flame retardant properties over time, especially after washing. Some suits are made of Kevlar, polybzimidazole fiber (PBI), or carbon fiber, but they are not widely used due to lack of comfort and different colors.
The interior fabrics of newer suits, such as those produced by Sparco, are treated with methanol to create coolness and combat odor.
Additional equipment such as fire-resistant underwear, gloves, shoes, and balaclava face masks or “head socks” are also worn.
When exposed to flame, Nomex material forms carbon char rather than burning or melting. The charcoal thickens the part of the fiber exposed to flame, preventing fire from spreading to the rest of the garment and heat transfer to the wearer.

CarbonX is a unique fabric for fire suits made from oxidized polyacrylonitrile (the precursor to carbon fiber). It’s made by heating the material until it oxidizes and chars, the finished product can last two minutes over an open fire. It is often used to operate underwear and gloves.
Meanwhile, using multiple layers of material and quilting the fabric creates air pockets that increase the wearer’s protection from heat.
The suits are not fire resistant, but they control the fire for longer periods of time, allowing the person to escape the scene or be rescued with minimal injuries.
Bill Simpson, a pioneer in safety racing, estimated in 1993 that a person had “20 to 30 seconds” before their fire suit started burning.

The level of protection prescribed for uniforms in different racing series varies, as do the minimum standards for drivers, crew members and officials.
For example, in the NHRA drag racing series, suits are designed to last 30 to 40 seconds before the wearer begins to suffer second-degree burns. This bchmark is higher than many other series due to the high fire risk from nitromethane and alcohol fueled vehicles.
SFI Foundation, Inc., formerly part of SEMA, mandates suit fire protection standards for many motorsports organizations in the United States, including NASCAR, IndyCar, NHRA, Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and United States Automobile . . Team (USAC). The FIA sets the standards for many of its series, such as Formula 1 and the FIA World Endurance Championship, with the exception of the standards for designated drag races.
